Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub

There are three sites within Centennial Park which contain endangered bushland known as Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub (ESBS) which is protected under Commonwealth and State legislation.

These sites will be progressively regenerated and managed for their unique ecological values. These areas include the:

A fourth site at York Road, Queens Park has already undergone initial regenerative work and has demonstrated outstanding results to date.

A description of each preservation project follows.

Bird Sanctuary

Things you will notice in the Bird Sanctuary:

  • The tree canopy will be progressively removed by up to 80% over the next few years. Canopy removal is necessary to allow more light into the area to stimulate regeneration of ESBS native plant species. ESBS trees and trees with cultural significance will be retained.
  • Primary weed removal will be undertaken initially, with secondary removal and maintenance over the next few years. The visual character of the Bird Sanctuary will change.

Initially, the site will appear more open and less ‘green’ than it currently does. As regeneration of the ESBS continues, vegetation density will increase and the character of the new vegetation will begin to return to its original ‘scrubby’ appearance.

Kensington Pond and York Rd (West) remnants

Changes you will see in Kensington Ponds Remnant and York Rd (West) Site:

  • Some targeted weed control work will be undertaken initially.
  • Protection of the regenerating ESBS seedlings and remnant native plants will take place.
  • Longer term management will be required to address the soil erosion from tracks which affect the regeneration of the remnants.

Volunteer opportunities

Centennial Parklands is working with the community to maintain and protect this significant bushland with both professional bush regenerators and volunteer bush regenerators.
