Design Your Own Program

Design Your Own Program at Centennial ParklandsThe Parklands can host a range of individual program modules that can be tailored to meet the needs of the particular course you are studying.

The new Education Precinct in the heart of Centennial Park now provides an all-weather facility for lessons and class work, while the adjacent ponds and plant nursery provide opportunities for some hands-on activity.

The following list provides an overview of available modules that can be delivered.

Program Activities

Abotic Testing

  • Soil pH, soil moisture, soils texture, soil smell, lux, wind speed, temperature, water pH, turbidity and electrical conductivity.

Animal and Plant Adaptations

  • Discover Centennial Parklands plants and animals and their unique adaptations taxidermy animals are used to highlight some of the animals special adaptations.

Biotic Testing

  • Water bugs, animal surveys, plant surveys.

Bird Posters

  • Create a crayon rubbing of different water birds using sandstone engravings.

Bird watching

  • Use binoculars and pictorial identification sheets to discover the variety of land and water birds in Centennial Park. Identify the adaptations and behavioural characteristics that enable species to survive in this habitat.

Bug Hunt

  • Using magnified bug catchers, hunt for terrestrial invertebrates that live in Centennial Parklands. Identify and study the unique adaptations of bugs and discuss their role in the ecosystem.

Capture marked Recapture

  • Learn how Centennial Parklands monitors and looks after it Ibis population.

Crazy Kites

  • Construct and decorate a kite to take home. Fly kites of different shapes and sizes and practise flying your kite under the guidance of a kite expert. Additional fee of $5.00 per kite.

Dipnetting

  • Fish for aquatic invertebrates that live in the ponds using dipnets. Sort and identify bugs to determine the water quality and ecology of the ponds.

Human Impacts

  • Tour the parklands and pond system within Centennial Parklands rangers. Learn about the humans impact on the Parklands how it is managed for sustainability.

Hunters and Convicts

  • Discover the significance of this heritage-listed site and how it has evolved over time. Using dress up, interactive role plays and dramatisations, bring back to life the characters that used this area throughout history.

Introduced Plants and Animals

  • Learn about introduced animals like European carp, rabbits, foxes, insects, weeds and how Centennial Parklands manages these introduced species.

Lachlan Swamp Field Study

  • Measure the biotic and abiotic factors influencing the ecosystem of Lachlan Swamp. Identify the abundance and distribution of dominant plant and animal species and discuss the human impacts affecting these patterns.

Lachlan Swamp Nature Trail

  • Follow the interpretive trail through this area of coastal paperbark swamp to discover the plants and animals in this ecosystem. Explore the environmental issues facing urban wetlands and how to contribute to their care.

Park Care

  • Conduct a litter patrol to analyse the impact of rubbish on the plants and animals in Centennial Parklands. Discuss options for minimising waste and pollution.

Places and Spaces

  • Discover the special places and spaces within Centennial Parklands. Explore built and natural environments such as wetlands, sports fields and playgrounds through an interactive walk and sensory activities.

Pond Walk

  • Tour the pond system within Centennial Parklands. Learn how stormwater enters the ponds and how it is managed for sustainability and improved water quality of our catchments.

Ranger Scenarios

  • Explore management issues such as stormwater pollution, algal blooms and injured wildlife. Discuss scenarios and develop solutions to overcome these issues.

Testing

  • Test for temperature, pH, turbidity and electrical conductivity. Identify issues associated with stormwater pollution and remediation techniques.

The World of Microbes

  • Join the Centennial Parklands Rangers as students search for evidence of bacteria and fungi! Learn about how plants and animals rely on these micro-organisms to survive and the part that they play in food chains and food webs.

Urban Fauna

  • Study the adaptations, behaviour and habitat of Centennial Parklands most significant native and/or introduced animal species. Discuss the issues facing urban wildlife such as habitat loss, predation by introduced species and other human impacts.

Water Quality

  • Use Streamwatch equipment to test the water quality of Centennial Park's ponds.

Wetlands Interpretive Trail

  • Walk this trail of mosaics, sculpture and signs portraying the environmental issues that pond restoration program is rehabilitating these important ecosystems.
